Colonial Mars: some verse for Elon.

Do you think humans will ever colonize Mars? What would life there actually look like?

Colonial Mars: some verse for Elon.

Below is a paragraph from Wikipedia’s introduction to the SpaceX Mars colonisation idea as proposed by Elon Musk, speaking as bought-in (by virtue of his ‘gifts’ to that society) lead of The Mars Society.

Elon Musk at the 2006 Mars Society conference

SpaceX Mars colonization program (also referred to as Occupy Mars as a joking reference to the Occupy movement) is the stated long-term objective of the company SpaceX, and particularly of its founder Elon Musk, to send humans to live on Mars. The plan is to establish a self-sustaining, large scale settlement and directly democratic, self-governing colony. The motivation behind this is the belief that colonizing Mars will allow humanity to become multiplanetary, thereby ensuring the long-term survival of the human race if it becomes extinct on Earth.

There is a lot of talk about humanity in this project, but even more of free economies and trade. Mars will be a colony, he claims, with ‘direct democracy’, making it sound like the colonies of Ancient Athens. His support for right wing causes on earth in other indirect democracies however might suggest that his ultimate dream is a meritocratic populism constrained only by enforced commitment to the principle of private property and  absence of regulation of overmighty subjects, with merit or even with the very negative of merit, who rule in ways that, because unregulated, are also unseen and hence even the more unregulated.

This option will allow the powerful in the status quo presently to continue to exploit the resources of Earth regardless of the effect of this on populations.

The following verse is not good but makes a point and keeps the blog count up!

Better Dead than Red

They came, conquered, and in their end they saw
Defeat for someone not themselves, a war
Fought to steal what is not yet possessed
And does not mean, without some doubt, they're best
Who plant their flag in claim before others,
Of that place in space.
              A red storm smothers
In dust, a glorious crimson becomes
The flag now, and so will stay, for sums
Of years. Live toxins stain it lurid red
Imperious reign over it and, us, now dead:
The dust mites singing: "Better Red than Fled".
