‘We rise again and push the night aside :…,’. The vanity in human ritual illustrated in routine. Or maybe I’m just a miserable git this particular morning!

We rise again and push the night aside:
"I will depart inside and therein mourn
the morning, confident of my return.
Although I am held back I'm still held tight:
Wishing for night's embrace slows morning's skip
Ahead, the drag of feeling Time's chariot
Inside we're pushed down deeply to darkness".

Ask me again the ritual morning
would have me lead, pretending its routine,
not driven by strong winds of strong dark will,
making time look lesser in effect than
I. Look back bare unaccomodated man,
The nights behind are ahead of your plan.

Why do we continue to believe we must enforce cheerfulness on the need for a reflective age that must finally realise that there is something amiss with feeling you can and should always get up and go? Maybe it is because we never face the fact that it is, in large part  not in our control what morning leads to for us as poor bare forked individual animals on their own. What is in our control  if we are wise, is a communal future made for the survivors and their survivors, but over that most of us do not even wish for control, thinking simple amoeba-like single cell selves our priority.

With love Steven ❤️
